Unable to open default email folders - the server is not available.

Was working OK until did a copy from Puget Sound Energy web site and pasted into an Outlook address card. Got the hour glass forever and had to close using Task Manager. Now Outlook opens and works only in safe mode. Have run detect & repair (successfully completes but no change in performance), created new profile (no change in performance), deleted profile from registry. After deleting profile from registry and opening Outlook to set up new account, program says profile must be configured. Unable to get beyond this.

Did you create a new profile in Control panel, Mail after deleting your profile from the registry?
Did you run scanpst?

Yes re the profile. Tried to run scanpst but hit a wall - as I recall it wanted to know which file to scan and the only relevant choice was Outlook, which I believe was not recognized. Glad to try it again - maybe I'm missing something.

Just tried scanpst again. It lets me browse for a file to scan but Outlook isn't recognized. The only other Outlook files are .dll files. Try those?

It sounds like you deleted more than the profile from the registry. Rather than use Detect & Repair, go into Add/Remove programs and reinstall office.

Just removed Office through Control Panel and re-installed. All other Office programs are fine, but Outlook is the same - works in safe mode only.

Finally able to make scanpst work - found and repaired errors. Ran again, no errors. Outlook still gives same message and only works in safe mode.

Deleted OUTCMD.DAT. Problem solved. Procedures found at slipstick.com and pchell.com. Thanks very much for your help!
