Outlook 2003 IMAP gmail account - limits?

Environment - Outlook 2003 running on XP machine. Have Gmail account IMAP into Outlook 2003. Gmail account has around 147,000 emails and growing - Outlook only gets/displays around the first 65,000. I'm only getting headers NOT the full email, is there limits to what outlook will get/display? How do I fix to get all 147,000 email headers to show in my outlook from the IMAP gmail account?

Thanks in advance.

Confused....I create a IMAP account to Gmail within my Outlook 2003 - I have No options to control how the file is created - since this is 2003, should it not already be a UNICODE file? I've tried this same procedure on a 2007 and get the same results.

Article says to create a new pst and copy the emails to it. The whole reason for IMAP is to leave the email on Gmail's machines until I open the email header and get the full email downloaded to me. Some or even more of these emails I may never open or read - so why would I want to create a pst file and bring these emails onto my machine?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, Ben, IMAP PSTs in Outlook 2003 cannot be Unicode. Not until Outlook 2007 were IMAP PSTs allowed to be Unicode.

I think Ben's hit on the problem. Use the gmail web interface and split your 147,000 message folder into multiple other folders to bring the number of messages in a single folder to under 64K.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't like to use IMAP. :)

Yep - the binary formatted files were limited to ~65K items per folder.

So there is no other fix other than to go to gmail and split the email into folders less than 65k? I wouldn't think if I'm just getting HEADERS Outlook would care what size the folder was. Really make no sense.

It's not the size, it's the number of items. Each folder has an index, sort of like a library's card catalog, that lists the number of records in the folder. The old binary PSTs, that index was limited to about 65,000 entries. It's just a limit of the old technology.

The best solution would actually be to upgrade to Outlook 2010 and then upgrade the PST file to UNICODE which doesn't have that limit. As my friend Brian pointed out above, Outlook 2003 doesn't support UNICODE PST files for IMAP accounts.

Ok, thanks for the information. This has drove me crazy - think i'm already there.

I really don't think 2010 works - it's better than 2003 and 2007, but keeps regetting the headers over and over again. If nothing changes - this shouldn't take forever to complete, unfortunatelly it does. Is there a setting in 2010 which needs to be set to control the IMAP better??

Thanks in advance.

2010, with a UNICODE PST, will fix your immediate problem of not being able to contain them all in one folder. Unfortunately I don't think IMAP is an especially good protocol for dealing with 147,000 messages at once.
