I use Vista. I attempted to open Outlook 2007 and got the following message" Cannot open your default e-mail folders. Outlook cannot start because a data file to send and receive mail cannot be found. To add a data file, such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel." I follow the instructions, select add to add a folder, it asks for the type of storage I want (MMService, Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (.pst)). I choose the Office Outlook Personal Folders File option. It then takes me to the exact location where I should save it. However, when I select OK, I get the following message " This information service is not installed on your computer." At this point I don't know what to do to get my Outlook 2007 to function again.

Help!

If Outlook suddenly stopped functioning, please state the steps that preceded the problem and what mail account types you were using in your Outlook profile. At this point, the possiblities are too many for us to determine a solution. There is more to your story, I bet.

If you were using an Outlook data file already, creating a new one would not be a solution for your problem.

I haven't used it for some time until just recently. I don't know what my last actions were that may have caused this problem since my last time using it was 4 or 5 months ago. Everything I know for sure is stated in my initial report. I have the Office 2007 Professional Suite. Every other Office program works just fine.

I don't suppose you ever backed up your Outlook data file or even knew where it was? I assume you don't really need to use Outlook since you hadn't used it for half a year, right?Russ Valentine

In the past I wasn't as interested in Outlook as I was other email options. But I have become more interested recently in it's tools and would appreciate any help to make it work again. I am unfamiliar with the details of computer backups and am open to learning more about it, especially if it assists in launching Outlook again.

It's hard to know what might have changed in 6 months. The first thing to do is find and repair your Outlook data file (it will be a hidden file). Make sure you note its name and location. Repair it using the Inbox Repair Tool:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227/en-us

Then direct Outlook to it the next time you launch Outlook.

I ran the SCANPST.exe, located the personal folders file and repaired it. I then went to the control panel, selected mail, and attempted to add a new data file. I tried to add the repaired personal file, but received the following error message:This information service is not installed on your computer.

When I follow your instructions to create a new profile under the general tab, I give a new name and select OK, then I receive this:This information service is not installed on your computer.

Make sure you gave the new profile a unique name. If, so, then repair your Office installation.

When you say " unique name" , you mean give it a name different from the broken one...correct? And when you say " repair your Office installation" , you mean delete the software from your computer and reinstall it...correct?

" Unique name" means a name you've never used before for any Outlook profile on this partition. It's easier than blowing away the registry key.

Removing and reinstalling never helps. You repair Office instalaltions using the Office Maintenance Wizard in Control Panel. It gives you three options: Remove, Add Features, or Repair...

I created a unique name for a new profile. However, I am unclear where the Office Maintenance Wizard resides. I looked in the control panel and didn't see it there. Will the wizard help create a new data file? I have a new profile but no data file, nor will it let me create a new data file.

You manage all your programs in Control Panel > " Programs and Features." Select your Office program. At the top you will see an option to " Uninstall," " Change," or " Repair." Choose " Repair." Have your Office CD handy in case your installation files weren't written to your hard drive.

I looked in " programs and features" and didn't find any Office programs. I selected START -> All Programs and found the folder with the entire suite. Why wouldn't they be under " programs and features" ? Is there a different method to repairing Outlook 2007?

No. I trust you did a complete install of the Office Suite on Vista. Might want to do so.Russ Valentine
