Outlook 2007 - single exchange Sent items, duplicate IMAP sent items?

Ok, I have 1 exchange account, 2 gmail accounts which are using IMAP.

When sending mail for the first time using a gmail account, it prompts to save sent items and there are no options to turn this off just for gmail. I understand there's an option to not save copies, but with that being disabled, exchange doesn't save the sent items.

The problem I'm having is that if I keep this feature enabled to save copies of sent items, I must pick a folder for gmail, which will save as a duplicate because by default when sending mail out of a gmail account using outlook, it saves on the server in the Sent Items folder. So why do I need to save another copy?

I'd like to save sent items from my exchange account, but leave gmail's alone. Is this possible? I know in Outlook 2010 you can disable this per-account.

Hello,

The setting for choosing a Sent Items folder for an IMAP account is accessible in the properties (via Tools | Accounts) of the IMAP account. When you access " More Settings" , the Folders tab shows the option. In the past, when an IMAP server account did not already have a Sent Items folder, Outlook would prompt to create it. Now, most accounts already have them, so newer versions of Outlook automatically check for a folder named Sent or the like, and uses it by default.
If gmail stores copies there by default, then that's beyond Outlook's functionality, which is to also store a copy in a folder. As you mention, that results in duplication.

You cannot configure Outlook 2007 to not save a copy to Sent Items without it affecting the Exchange Account if it's in the same profile.
