Urgent: Database logs disk full

Hello,

In Exchange 2010 Database logs disk is full. I have not run backups at all. How to clear those logs?

All e-mails are in queue.

Enabled circular logs for database which cleared all log files. I believe circular logs are not recommended for backups and will disable when I'm ready for backup jobs.

But if I want to clear manually these log files how can I do that at that point though?

You never want to manually clear log files. Either back them up or enable circular logging like you have done. These are the only supported (and safe) ways to clear the logs.

Log files compress pretty well. Block-select and set a bunch of them to be compressed. You also may want to consider running a full backup so that it will clear those log files by default and basically start them over.

Understood. I also liked volume compress method too when in crunch I can implement that.

I wouldn't set the whole volume to be compressed. Just manually tag and compress enough of the oldest log files to get you the drive space you need.

That way you don't have compression/decompression in the middle of the process of writing and committing log files. When the database backup runs, it will delete the compressed log files. If it goes sideways, you still have the log files to fall back on.

If you are in a real bind, you could dismount the DB and then run ESEUTIL /MH <dbfilename> and check the " Logs Required" field. This will give you the name of the log files required in hexidecimal. While it is not a recommended practice, you could then delete any log files older than the files listed in that field without losing data. Of course this also means you're backups will have a divergence point and you will need to do a backup immediately to ensure you can recover going forward.

Again this is not a recommended practice, but it is a way to safely remove log files without using circular logging.
