Exchange 2003 to 2010 Migration - Public Folder Replication Failed - Busy/Free Issue

I thought I had replicated the Public Folder store from 2003 to 2010, and then perhaps mis-interpreted some instructions on a KB that I thought said drag the Public Folder from First Admin Group to Exchange Corporate Group folders. I can still see the system public folders under the 2003 server by looking at the public store and expanding it, and I can see the public folders in 2010 from the PF viewer in EMC. There are still issues, though, as I cannot get to the properties of he system folders on 2003 this way, but I can access the properties of them in 2010 EMC PF viewer.

I went back and put both servers in every replication folder I could find, and in 2003 System Manager, I am getting notification that both systems are updated for offline address book and schedule + Free Busy. But not so much I think in reality.

About every 10 minutes I get the event applicaiton log postings:

Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchangeMailboxAssistants
Date: 12/10/2010 7:14:55 PM
Event ID: 14029
Task Category: FreeBusy Assistant
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: MANA.datstat.com
Description:
Couldn't find an Exchange 2010 or later public folder server with a replica for the free/busy folder: EX:/o=DatStat/ou=First Administrative Group.
Event Xml:
<Event xmlns=" http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event" >
<System>
<Provider Name=" MSExchangeMailboxAssistants" />
<EventID Qualifiers=" 49156" >14029</EventID>

<Computer><server>.<domain>.com</Computer>
<Security />
</System>
<EventData>
<Data>EX:/o=<domain>/ou=First Administrative Group</Data>
</EventData>
</Event>

I swapped out the real domain name with <domain> and server name with <server>

The server name that appears is the new 2010 server, and the PF shows SCHEDULE + FREE BUSY with two elements under it

" EX:/o=<domain>/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)" " \NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY"
" EX:/o=<domain>/ou=First Administrative Group" " \NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUS

The 2003 Exchange is essentially ready to be de-commissioned. It no longer has any mailboxes on it, all mail flow is through the 2010, and it is a matter of getting rid of stuff at this point.

Can I simply blow away the SCHEDULE + FREE BUSY folder on the 2010 server, or do I need to create a real folder for it or change the parameters on it to show that it is truly on the 2010 server? I looked at the properties under ASDEDIT but was completely unclear about what property to change, and to what value. I also checked out a few shell commands, but i had the same issue: what values go into the parameters, and how I locate them (like name of the public store database on 2010, etc.)

Summary

I apparently did not get proper replication of the Public Folders and may have screwed it up by doing a move to 2010 via EMC. Now, i have replication set between the two but not working properly. I want to completely remove the 2003 server installation. How can I create a proper set of system folders in 2010, or do I need them at all?

Thanks to all in advance.

Hi,

Based on the error message in the Event log, please check the following information:

1. Check the proxyAddresses attribute of Public Folder Database, open ADSI, expand CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com. expand CN=Services, expand CN=Microsoft Exchange, expand CN=Domain, expand CN=Administrative Groups, expand CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), expand CN=Databases, locate CN=Public Folder Database and right click it, find the proxyAddresses attribute, ensure value is set.

2. Ensure the Folder Hierarchies is existing under First Administrative Group. The msExchOwningPFTree's value of Public Folder Database under Exchange 2010 should be the same as the distinguishedName of Folder Hierarchies under Exchange 2003

Also, please run ExBPA to diagnose it.

Thanks.

Novak

I did and here is what I found:
The proxuyAddress value has two entries:
SMTP:publicFolderDatabase0629121937@<domain>.com
X400:C=US;A= ;P=<domain>;O=Exchange;S=PubicFolderDatabase0629121937
Would that be correct or would it require change? Under Administrative Groups, there are two: CN=<domanin> Corporate and CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT). It appears as though FFirst Administrative Group got renamed? Should it be renamed back?
At any rate, there is an object CN=Folder Heiarchies in that group, but nothing shows up in the middle pane of the edit as does when I click on the same folder in CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) container. What shows up in that one is CN=Public Folders, class is msExchPFTree and distinquished name is CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=<domain>,CN=Microsoft Exchange, CNServices, CN=Configuration,CN=<domain>,CN=com

The 14029 Free Busy Assistant error I am getting in the applcatione event log has as its text

In the 2123 error, the text lists four domain controllers. Two of them don't exist any longer and one of those two is the failing DC in the 2107 errors (can't get IP address). Yet in AD, these two missing servers do not appear anywhere based on a visual inspection and a search. Where would the information about them possibly be stored to delete it? the 2123 error looks like it may be pointing to a dns entry?

Couldn't find an Exchange 2010 or later public folder server with a replica for the free/busy folder: EX:/o=<domain>/ou=First Administrative Group.

That makes me believe I should rename the <domain> Corporate object?????

And here is another wierd thing. Along with the 14029 error, I also get a 2107 followed by a 2123 followed by another 2107 referencing an old DC that no longer exists.

Looks like I found the bad DC stuff in DNS. No problem.Larry Heimendinger TechEvents.com

Hi,

Is the issue resolved after removing the bad DC? Is everything working fine now? If there is any problem, please feel free to let me know.

Regards,

Novak

Nope. Removing the DNS entries did nothing to stop any of the event log erros.

Should I rename back to First Administator Group the entity that has been renamed as <Domain> Corporate? That might be why the free busy cannot be found.

Also, the old and no longer active DC might be embedded in some AD objects that require manual editing. Any tips on where to look?

Okay, I changed the distinguished name of the object to be First Administrative Group, but I still get the same errors. So that didn't do the trick.Larry Heimendinger TechEvents.com
