Exchange 2010 Configuration Question Internal Domain for External Clients

Hello,

We I have recently installed Exchange 2010 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Edition Server. Everything seems to be fine, I can configure clients using Autodiscover with no errors, and if I go to testexchangeconnectivity.com it passes the tests (there is an error but not sure if it says it passed the tests.

If I configure outlook on another computer externally (ie at my house), I still can use autoconfigure using the settings, but when I view the settings in Outlook of the configuration it shows the server as being Exchange.domain.local instead of exchange.domain.com . I have been unable to find if this is a problem, and also where to fix it.

This same server name configures when I try to set it up on a mobile phone, it is successfull, but when I look at those settings it appends a .local instead of the exchange.domain.com address.

I tried to add a DNS record to the server earlier today but that did not make a difference, but I am not sure if that is something that takes a while to update.

Can someone help me with this?

The behaviour you are seeing is correct. Outlook will show the real server name where your mailbox is located (or the CAS server, or the CAS array, depending on your topology).

If you want to use Exchange outside your network then you should configure Outlook Anywhere. That will use a public URL.

I believe that I had tried to configure outlook anywhere, that is what we want people to use (that is the RPC over http correct?) .

Outlook Anywhere is enabled, we want people to use the rpc over http for the connection, and the settings seem to configure correctly everywhere else, if I look at connection settings after autoconfig, it shows the correct msstd:exchange.domain.com, basic authentication, so it seems like that is working, but we are unable to get the server name to show anything other than .local, and it seems like that would cause a problem for some external users.

As I have already said, the server name being the internal name will NOT be a problem. That is how it is designed to work.
Run the Outlook Anywhere test. If that is successful then you should be able to connect.

Ok, that sounds good, I don't know exactly what the outlook anywhere test is, but I was just worried about the internal domain name showing up, but it sounds like it's 100% normal, so I will trust that. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.

ON a side note, when I created my name yesterday, I should've chosen something cooler than Brett Favre 4 President...especially this year.

Hi,

Yes, that's normal. It's the CAS name which configured as RPCClientAccessServer attribute on the Mailbox Database.

Thanks
