Getting Autodiscover to work with other web servers ...

Hello,

We have a Microsoft Exchange 2007 setup and everything works great except for Autodiscover.

When an external client tries to connect to domain.com/Autodiscover/autodiscover.xml, a problem arises since this doesn't exist on our main web server. Our autodiscover URL is (autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml)

So, in turn, clients (especially PDAs and Smartphones) cannot connect without using the manual setup.

Does the main web system just need to host the files from the Autodiscover directory on Exchange? Or is there another route to set up clients so that when the PDA/Smartphones perform an autodiscovery that they get sent to the right place?

Autodiscover should go through a number of URLs before failing completely. The root domain is just one of them. Certainly I have the root domain pointing to my public web site and autodiscover works fine. There is no need to have the autodiscover content on the main web server - you couldn't do that even if you wanted to because the file is generated on the fly from the Exchange information.

Do you have autodiscover.example.com in your SSL certificate as one of the additional names?

Run a test account through the autodiscover test at exrca.com.

I ran the test through the exrca.com service and it passed.

However, when I try and add an account through my PDA (for Andriods, as an example) the mail server field defaults to the main web server.

Is there a redirection file I can put on may main web server to point to my Exchange installation?

I don't know if the Andriod devices properly observe the autodiscover process. I know Windows Mobile devices do, but third parties do not always implement the full ActiveSync protocol.

The only redirect method that Microsoft have provided is this:

However that is unlikely to be possible for you to implement.

If things work though the Microsoft test then it must be a limitation of the Andriod.

Thanks. I discovered via two threads which I will list below that the problems are indeed limited to the devices and not my setup.

I'll just send people within my organization a set of instructions for now and wait for the other devices to be fixed via patches on their end.
