Saw some posts on this but no definitive solution. Outlook 2010 installed on a new laptop. Ported over .pst data files (also from Outlook 2010) and all 'looks' fine. Have 4 email 'account settings'. The POP accounts I can select/delete a single email. The last account which used to be IMAP on the old laptop I decided to make POP on the new laptop - I suppose that may have something to do with it? If I select multiple email from the inbox I can delete them but if highlighting a single email the 'delete' icon (or right-click delete) is greyed out.

Thanks in advance-

Warren

Negative- the account currently set up as POP not IMAP. The account USED to be set up as IMAP on the old laptop/data file and when porting over the data file maybe that is when it got corrupted/confused?

Maybe I need to backup the datafile and recreate a new outlook profile?

Can you read the messages you can't delete ? If so, i don't think it's from changing account type.

This is Windows 7? Try searching for the messages in the Start Search field - do they delete?

If not, have you run scanpst yet?

Yes I can read the messages; W7 Pro; search field doesn't seem to matter (still can't delete). Have not run scanpst - some utility? Also I've discovered that the older emails (from a month ago) that I wanted to keep after porting over the PST file - I CAN delete those; it's just any of the the 'new' ones (Ones that have been downloaded to outlook since the PST file was brought to my new laptop and the email account is now POP vs. the old IMAP setting on the old laptop outlook). How Bizarre....

See How to use Scanpst for instructions.

Do you get any error messages when you try to delete the messages in Outlook?

Oh, and if you use Windows Start Search field to find them, Outlook needs to be closed - you can't delete them while outlook is open.

Exact same problem. Was this ever resolved? What did you do to fix it?

I can select an individual e-mail in the inbox, read it, move it, just can't delete it with the "delete" icon - which is greyed out. Funny thing though, if I select the message and use the delete key on the keyboard it deletes fine. Currently doing a Scanpst on the outlook file; it is somewhat large. I Will drop a note here in a few minutes advising if that fixes the problem or not.....

The scanpst process found errors in the .pst file, but it didn't fix the problem with the greyed out "delete" icon. Any ideas anyone?

You can try this:

First, download a tool called mfcmapi

http://mfcmapi.codeplex.com/

Launch mfcmapi

Click Session -> Logon

Select appropriate profile

Double-click appropriate data store (PST/OST)

Expand Root Container

Expand Top of information store

Select Inbox

Double-click PR_CONTAINER_CLASS and change PF.Imap to PF.Note

I had this problem with a POP3 account with gmail. It turned out that the inbox thought that it contained some IMAP items when it didn't.

Solution.

1) check that the gmail (or whoever) account is set to POP3

2) rename the outlook.pst file to oldoutlook.pst (or anything.pst)

3) start up outlook and tell it to create a new account called outlook.pst.

The mail settings will have been preserved and all that you need to do is to create a test email and then send\receive. Check that the received email can be deleted by using the delete key or right click. If it can't, go back and check the server settings and ensure that you've got a POP3 account.

When you can delete it, just import the old file and bingo! - all the emails can then be deleted. This is because outlook imports emails and not folder settings.

simples!
