I've had this problem for a very long time.
I can work around it, but it's annoying.

First, I compose an email and save it in the DRAFTS folder.
Then, I open the draft, make some changes and try to save it back into drafts.
The error is:
The item cannot be saved because it was changed by another user or in another window. Do you want to make a copy in the default foler for the item?
Well, SORRY but no one else made any changes!

I suspect this is a bug that MS doesn't know about or hasn't addressed yet.
BUT maybe it's a simple setting that I could change.

If it helps to understand what's going on, here's my workaround:
I highlight the portion of the draft email that has changed
I copy it to the clipboard
I close the draft email without saving it
I open it again
I paste from the clipboard.
NOW I can save it back into the draft folder.

Thanks. I'll pay attention to how quickly I save.
I should also be able to see if outlook is syncing while I'm saving if I look at the sync display at the bottom of the window. yes?

Again...opened from drafts...made a change...tried to save...same error message.
Looked at the MAIL screen at the bottom and no syncing visible.
Waited 5 minutes; same error message; waited another 5; same error message.
So, it doesn't look to me like an IMAP sync is causing this problem

It's a bug in the imap sync with outlook.

Usually, switching folders fixes it. Open the message, switch folders and come back to drafts then try saving it.

It looks like this bug was fixed in outlook 2016 - I'm not triggering the message with my gmail account. It's also not creating duplicate drafts - each time a draft was saved, outlook used to create a copy of it.

I'm thinking that perhaps I should just move to Outlook 2016. I'm an office 365 subscriber.
Any advice on outlook, word or excel issues moving from 2013 to 2016?

If you aren't using a program that only works with outlook 2013, such as BCM, there is little reason not to move if you have the subscription. There isn't a whole lot of differences in the applications between the versions. You shouldn't have any issues in the upgrade.

I'm still struggling with this "item can't be saved" issue in Outlook 2016 for the last year and a half. Can I try turning off syncing? I don't sync to any mobile device or other PC, so I'm thinking I don't need it?

The only way to turn off sync is to switch to a pop account - yes you can do that but POP downloads inbox only. if you are using other folders in the imap account, they wont be downloaded using pop.

Diane, I'm still having this VERY annoying problem, wonder if it has been fixed since this post? Thanks!
