Outlook 2016 Auto-archive creates new folder

I am using the latest version of Outlook 365 with a number of IMAP accounts.

I have set the auto-archive function to use an archive.pst in a location of my choosing. Every time auto-archive runs I get a new 'Archives' folder created that has an archive.pst data file located in my \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\ folder. This pst is empty and the archive correctly moves the archived items to the data file that I have nominated.

How can I prevent this empty pst being created every time auto-archive runs? It is not a great issue but I am fed up with having to remove this folder after auto-archive has run.

Hi Diane,

When I say 'empty' there are 2 sub folders 'Deleted Items' and 'Search Folders' and both of those are empty. I have 7 IMAP accounts configured in this profile with probably over 50 sub folders total. I have looked at a random sample and particularly the 'Deleted Items' folders and they all point to my chosen location for the archive.pst data file. I do have a number of folders with custom settings for 'Do not archive' and my 'trash' folders are set to permanently delete old messages however in both cases the greyed out location for the archive data file is still my custom location.

I have found a registry entry here 'Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Search' that lists the rogue location as well as all my .ost and .pst files including my custom location for archive.pst.

To be honest I cannot remember why I am using a custom location. Maybe I should just copy my archive.pst to the default location and accept it, after all that is where all the other .ost and .pst data files are. It seems a bit of a cop out as I would like to understand what is causing this issue, but if it gets around the problem then so be it.
