is using Outlook with an SSD a good idea?

Hi all. I run my business on Outlook 2007. I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro running Windows 7 via Boot Camp. I use Microsoft Exchange via GoDaddy and I have about 20,000 contacts. I upgraded to a 480GB SSD to speed things up. After two weeks I started experiencing Blue Screens Of Death. I was normally using Outlook at the time that these BSODs occurred; maybe opening an email, hitting send, something like that. I use a couple of Outlook add-ins like auto-followup and outlook templates, and they used to crash my regular old-school hard drive, so maybe they had something to do with the problems here. In any case the drive began failing so I had the vendor send me a new drive.

As I sit here reinstalling all the programs, I've come across several forums talking about how Outlook and SSD don't work well with each other. This is the most prominent story I've noticed: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...oblem-outlook-2007-solid-state-disks-ssd.html. These posts normally point to this page as evidence: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940226, specifically the part which explains that storing and retrieving data in an Outlook data file involves a high number of small noncontiguous reads and writes, which is supposedly not the SSD's forte. This is perfect for me (sarcasm button on) as the only reason I bought this SSD was to speed up my Outlook experience and by extension, my life. A few of these discussions recommend moving Outlook to an auxiliary old-school drive but I'm constantly on the move and can't run around with two drives.

Question: what can I do to ensure a stable Outlook/SSD experience? Is a stable Outlook/SSD experience even possible? Or should I just go back to old-school hard drives?

Seems like upgrading to Outlook 2013 might help, but I'm only willing to do that if Outlook 2013 can use a customized contact form I created in Outlook 2007 which is vital to my business and I can't do without.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide here.

do you know if the drive is a first generation SSD? At 480 Gb, i would imagine its the latest and greatest... it's possible that the failing drive just showed up in Outlook because it is what you use all the time.

Hey Diane, thanks for your responses. It's a Mushkin Callisto. I tested it and it works at 98MB per second. Pretty sure it's the latest and greatest. But when I took it to the shop after the BSODs started, it tested as failing on the SmartUtility app.

I've read about SSDs having a limited number of writes, and that Outlook does an awful lot of writes. Do you think I just had a bad drive last time? Or do you think this is a problem endemic to SSDs and Outlook?

I don't know. I have a question in to my support contacts to see what they have to say.

Thanks, Diane. It seems insane that Outlook can sink an SSD but that's what it looks like from here. I've just downloaded the subscription-based Office 365 Outlook 2013 and I can't make heads or tails of it. I'd really rather stick with Outlook 2007 as I know it backwards and forwards, but I guess if it will make my SSD happy I'll have to do so.

I'm trying to import a customized contact form in fdm format into Outlook 2013. It's sitting on my desktop. Do you know how I can make that happen? Also, is this Office365 a fully functional offline and online version just like Outlook 2007 is? Or is there some kind of catch?

I'm not sure Office 2013 will help - waiting to here from my contacts. One Outlook developer said he thinks it's a bad drive - he's using 2 SSDs (256 each) in his laptop and hasn't had a problem.

Heh. Shoulda checked my email before i posted that - Support got back with me and said no support cases in the last compule of years, only the first generation of drives had issues. New drives should be ok.

To answer your other questions - Office365 subscription is fully functional. Only catch is you can't work off the grid for more than about 30 days - office needs to check on the license peridocially.

On the form, open File, Options, Advanced. Click on Custom Forms, then Manage Forms. Click Install then browse for the form. (How to publish a custom form)
